Sunday Talk: “Back Door Cooking: Feeding Strangers, Nourishing Community”
June 22 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm PDT

For centuries, Canadians have quietly practiced a humble form of hospitality—sharing food from the back door with those in need. In this moving and practical presentation, culinary historian Judy Corser explores the long tradition of feeding strangers in times of hardship, from the hungry travelers of the 1930s to today’s unhoused and overlooked neighbours.
Drawing from her academic background in food culture and her current community meal project in Powell River—where she prepares three-course dinners for 25 people on a shoestring budget—Judy will share stories, historical context, graphics, and hands-on resources. Attendees will leave with sample menus, thoughtful reflections, and practical inspiration for how they might begin or support similar efforts in their own communities.
A talk that blends history, heart, and how-to, Back Door Cooking invites us to reimagine food not just as sustenance, but as a powerful act of care and connection.
